A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
