The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
