No professional sports organization markets parity in the manner of the NFL: it's their core marketing message. However, after ten games in this campaign, this is not a competition that is equally balanced between the good, the bad and the mediocre. It’s one where most of the league is simply adequate.

NFC Clarity

Looking at the NFC side, at least, there is some clarity. Los Angeles and Seattle (each holding 7-2 records) appear to be the most complete teams across the league, and delivered decisive victories on Sunday. Philadelphia at 6-2 even with their challenges still have a deeply skilled squad in the league, likewise with Green Bay (5-2-1 record). Even the Lions (6-3 standing), despite their uneven performances in trench play and navigating coaching drama, have demonstrated they can hammer good teams. For all five, it's straightforward to put together a Super Bowl path.

AFC Confusion

In the AFC however, the playoff picture is a jumbled mess. The four teams leading their divisions at this stage: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all at 8-2) and Steelers (5-4 record). Take another look. Not the Chiefs. No Bills inclusion. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. Historically strong franchises, supported by premier quarterback talent, possess either obvious team deficiencies or are dealing with health issues.

League Equality Design

To some extent, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. Yet observing this year’s four division leaders in the American Football Conference still feels strange. Components of every squad meet championship standards, yet not completely. If you were asked to commit to your AFC title game selections today, could you assuredly choose any among the current division frontrunners?

Team Breakdowns

Indianapolis Colts

Beginning with the Colts, Daniel Jones hasn’t quite reached total collapse. But the last two weeks have caused alarm. He has returned to giving away possessions and faltering under duress. He was sacked seven times versus Atlanta in the weekend game, and endured a short sequence during which he tossed an intercepted pass and lost three fumbles. This is a week after he committed turnovers on five occasions facing the Steelers.

The Colts’ offense excelled during early games as Jones prevented the disaster plays. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line mean the Colts are capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, like their German performance. But Jones returning to his previous error-filled form would end any playoff run.

New England Patriots

The Patriots seem fairly alike. Previously, they were league laughingstocks. Currently, they represent football's most unexpected success and the hottest team in football post seven wins in a row. Had it not been for losing due to fumbles a winnable game versus the Steelers, they’d be sitting nine wins, one loss with the best record. Last season, they were old and slow. Currently they're young, fast and unafraid. Still, it’s hard to ignore the weakness of New England's opponents. They've encountered the most manageable schedule across the NFL, and there have still been cracks. The signal-caller has taken sacks thirty-five times – the second-most in football – including particular impacts he endured during the game were vicious. Over time, those hits add up.

Broncos Situation

Denver stands at 8–2 as well, and it still feels like they're nervously waiting. Bo Nix has been erratic, with the attack struggling, with the defense doing all the heavy lifting. Absent adequate signal-calling, the Broncos aren’t scaring anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also contending within their division at 7-2, yet medical problems along their offensive line will present challenges for extended playoff success.

Pittsburgh Situation

And then there’s Pittsburgh, surprisingly atop the AFC North even after suffering a 25-10 defeat from the Chargers during prime time. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defensive unit frequently falters, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations during his career phase continue to show up. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, yet Baltimore, featuring a recovered Jackson and the schedule softening, are on a three-game win streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that Baltimore has closed the gap to just one game, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within the Steelers' uneven performances. Considering the Ravens opened with a 1-5 record and still look like they should win the division reveals much about the entire AFC.

Established Contenders

The Ravens' form part among three elite teams – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who would still strike the highest anxiety among competitors should they reach postseason. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, however, both franchises continue to self-destruct.

Buffalo Analysis

Last week, Buffalo was celebrating following victory over Kansas City. On Sunday they suffered among the season's worst defeats during the campaign. They didn't simply fail versus the Dolphins; they suffered humiliation, falling 30-13 on the road. This represented Miami's initial victory against Buffalo in more than 1,000 days.
