Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
