New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
