The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
