The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
