The Red Devils Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Major Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
