Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
